These days software has become bloated. How many times have you found the built-in software that you know that you will not need. Do you really need a web browser into your word processor? Personally, all I want to do is type a document. I do not need surf the Web in my application processing. If I do, I just load up a browser.
The software price increases over the years and we end paying for things that we did not ask. Not only that, but it becomes confusing to use and is subject to errors. It is as if something – the more they stuff in these applications over the potential for something to go wrong. It's the same thing with cell phones. How much people really want to watch TV on their cell phone? You try to make a simple call and find CNN is moving his hand.
Do we really need our microwave ovens have a capacity for MP3 playback?
In general, these extra features tend to be poor imitations of the real thing. Think of your camera phone or video camera. Is it really as good as a All camera functions or digital camcorder?
In modern hard disk recorders or DVD recording became the standard for TV recording. Some people still use video recorders though. This is not because they are the cause of time and refuse to update. It may be that they are comfortable with the older technology – it works and why change something for the pleasure to do?
Now think about your own database applications Access to a minute. Are you including the characteristics of your database that you or the customer simply does not need? Poor form Access database design can cause fatigue, eyestrain and make the user prone to errors. Keep it simple, but effective.
When designing forms try to join standards for Windows in your application. For example, we are all familiar with the 'X' symbol in the upper right of a form. We know that will close our windows. Similarly there are rules designed to maximize and minimize a window.
Do not strain to which the user is using GotFocus and LostFocus. These thoughts should be used only if necessary.
Use the labels before your data fields. This helps the user identify what the field is used. Do not use a large number of fonts installed on your form and keep things as italics and Underlining to a minimum. Some developers like to use lots of bold text in their forms. Personally, I am not willing to text in bold for labels and prefer something light.
Group fields together when information is linked. Make sure you set the tab order correctly. There is nothing worse than a field tab to find it went elsewhere.
Use technology in the buttons – it is need to recreate the wheel. There are standard buttons for browsing, sorting, etc.
