My external hard drive makes my laptop crash and not start. Any ideas on how to help?

I plugged my old external hard drive (5 years and over) in my 1.5 years old laptop for the first time this morning and it crashed my computer. Now I can not even on my computer, even if the battery is fully charged. Anybody have any ideas? " Should not I connect this external hard drive another computer ever?

Also check the compatibility of your site OS to see if the disk appears.
