How I can convert an old desktop computer into a server?

= Windows 98 operating system Hard Drive 4 GB = I think maybe more that has a CD burner i wold prefer free only for dial-up connections, but I'm willing to go to find a new network card for

Depends on what you want to serve. Only he could "share a folder and call it the poor server file. It sounds a little outdated, so do not use for "mission critical" services. You can download the specific server software for Windows (free), which provide specific services. Alternatively, you can throw linux on it that has a lot of open source services that can be installed when you install the operating system or download later. Look at Fedora or CentOS, maybe.
